My problem casued the stall at the same point but I could not get to the disk. After many hours of looking for help, and just playing around, I finally figured out that on of my two 2 2 GB sticks of RAM was ctcdisk.

So it's very necessary for you to check your hardware devices. It did it's job and the old drive is now working. THen I tried to hook up the old drive as a 2nd hard drive.

Finally I have an answer to this problem. If there is any available update, click Install Updates button. My friend had the same problem with Vista stopping at crcdisk. Keeping track of when and where your STOP error occurs is a critical piece of information in troubleshooting the problem. Boot frow cd with Hirens boot, run Partition magic, resized partition C add x GB subtract x GB so nothing changes effectively and after that Vista was up and running like nothing happened.
